We offer expert advice

How water resistant is my watch?
Because the water resistance of a watch often leads to misunderstandings and wrong usage, atomic-clock.org.uk would like to offer a small overview of what you can expect from your watch, in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.

The manufacturers specifications about water resistance may be given in Meters, Bar or ATM.
You can convert these values as such: 1 ATM = 1,01325 Bar and 1 Bar = 10 Metres.

So the information, that a watch is watertight up to 30 m does not mean that you can dive to a depth of 30 m with this watch, but that it will withhold a pressure of up to 3 Bar. So this means, that a watch with a water resistance of up to 30 m is actually only good for splash water. Further information can be obtained from the table below.

Where can I find a products measurements?

Assessment of your wrist-strap length
To measure the circumference of your wrist, you only need a piece of strink and a ruler. Wrap the string around your wrist, so that it sits comfortably. Then measure the length of the string with the ruler. The result is your wrist-band size for your watch.

Please note that you need a fingers breadth of air between your wrist and the strap.

Assessment of your ring size
The easyest way to establish your ring size is to choose the best fitting ring you already have, and measure its inner diameter at the widest point. This is best done, by laying the ring on a piece of paper and to draw around the inside of the ring. Then you can easily measure the diameter with a ruler. Our conversion table will then tell you which inner diameter complies with which ring size.

Care instructions for your watch
Not every watch needs special care automatically, but with some types of watch special attention and regular cleaning is recommended. Here we have compiled a list of the most important things to watch, when taking care of your watch:
  • Protect your watch from sunlight. The UV-radiation can lead to unaesthetic discolouring of the case and strap.
  • To clean your watch use a soft cotton cloth. Cleaning agents can damage your watches surface because they often contain agressive chemicals.
  • Check the water resistance of your diver's watch once a year. The water resistance is not constant.
  • Especially mechanical and automatic watches should be taken to a watchmaker for a complete overhaul, approx. every five years. Here the rubber bearings and oils should be renewed.
  • If you posess a mechanical watch which needs to be wound up by hand, you should replace the winding crown every year.
  • Tip: Go to your watchmaker to get your watch maintained.

Care instructions for your jewellery
We would generally recomment cleaning your jewellery regularly, so that it keeps its beauty as long as possible. Here is some general advice:
  • Use a soft cotton cloth to clean your jewellery, or use a special cloth for that purpose. Special cloths are available for gold and for silver. These usually contain special cleaning agents that will bring back your jewellery's gleam.
  • For silver jewellery we recommend: flat surfaces can be polished with a silver cleaning cloth. Structured and hard to get at surfaces should be cleaned using a special siver cleaning agent.
  • Do not use general household cleansing agents, because these can damage your jewellery's surface with their agressive chemical components.
  • Some gemstones and all pearls do not go well with chemicals at all! So you can enjoy your jewellery as long as possible, we recommend putting your jewellery off before showering or bathing. Please take care, that sensitive gems and pearls are not subjected to to soap, hair spray, etc.
  • Not all pieces of jewellery are suitable for an ultrasound bath. Glued and varnished materials, pearls or oiled stones can take damage.
  • Tip: If you are unsure how to clean your jewellery properly, we stronlgy recommend you go to a specialized jeweller for advice.
