The direct translation of the word chronograph is time writer. This term is generally used for watches that have been fitted with a stop-watch function. The chronograph offers the possibility of stopping one or more of its digits, without stopping the entire drive. Because modern digital watches are often easier to use and are much more accurate, chronographs have taken more of a fashionable role. But this has not stopped them being very popular, especially amongst brands such as Citizen or Seiko.
